Western Michigan University was founded in 1903 as a public research university. Originally, the university was known as the Western State Normal School, and it offered students two-year training programmes. It had been renamed several times before getting its current name. With 117 students registered in 1904, the university hosted its first session of classes. In addition, the institution conferred its first master's degree in 1953 and its first doctoral degree in 1968. In the year 2000, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching designated WMU as a research-based university.
