Wayne State Institution, located in the heart of Detroit, is a prominent public urban research university. Wayne State University, founded in 1868, offers almost 350 academic programmes to a diverse student body of nearly 27,000 students.

The main campus of Wayne State University spans more than 250 acres in Detroit's Midtown district, with over 100 buildings totalling 11.7 million gross square feet. The School of Medicine site is near the Detroit Medical Center, and TechTown, Wayne State's 12-block, 43-acre research and technology park, is close by. More than 3,100 students are housed in six student housing halls and apartment complexes.

Six satellite campuses serve Wayne State University: three in Macomb County, one each in Wayne and Oakland Counties, and one in Jackson County. The Mike Ilitch School of Business, the College of Education, the College of Engineering, the College of Fine, Performing, and Communication Arts, the Graduate School, the Law School, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the School of Information Sciences, the School of Medicine, the College of Nursing, the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and the Irvin D. Reid Honors College are among Wayne State's 13 schools and colleges.

Graduate students can choose from a variety of majors, including those offered by business, law, and medicine institutions. Midwifery, anaesthesia, and pharmacy schools at Wayne State are also among the best in the country. Students at Wayne State perform research, as part of the school's collaboration with Michigan State University and the University of Michigan, in which the three schools collaborate on research and development to benefit the state's economy. Outside of the classroom, Wayne State students can participate in over 200 campus organisations or explore Detroit's museums, concert halls, and major sports stadiums. Students can join one of Wayne's several Division II Warriors sports teams, which compete on a variety of occasions.

Researchers at Wayne State University are investigating metabolic anomalies linked to cardiovascular infections, diabetes, and a variety of other conditions. Environmental modulators of metabolism and metabolic disease, circadian stress mechanisms in metabolic disorders, adipose tissue cell and molecular biology, novel obesity and diabetes therapeutics, metabolic genetics and inherited metabolic disorders, insulin resistance and diabetes, energy homeostasis, bio lipid metabolism and inflammation, and more are among the topics covered in the research.
