The University of Rochester is a private, non-sectarian institution that was founded in 1850. The Middle States Commission on Higher Education, the New York State Board of Regents, the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs, Inc., and the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care have all granted accreditation to the school.
The 154-acre River Site, home to the River Campus Libraries and the University's primary academic campus, is located about two miles south of downtown Rochester by a bend in the Genesee River. With the support of approximately 3000 teaching staff and other professionals, the university offers over 200 programmes. It boasts smaller classes with a low student-to-teacher ratio of 10:1, allowing for more communication between students and faculty. The University has about 12,000 students, including 6,780 undergraduates and 5,030 full-time graduate students. There are about 250 student bodies and organisations at the university, as well as several club and intramural sporting groups.
The William E. Simon Graduate School of Business Administration, School of Medicine and Dentistry, Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and School of Arts and Sciences all offer graduate programmes at the University of Rochester. More than 20 music ensembles call the Eastman School of Music home, including the first wind ensemble in the United States. Aside from that, the Institute of Optics, which was founded in 1929, was the country's first optics education programme.
Furthermore, the institution is one of New York's top ten employers, and it employs the most people in the Greater Rochester area. One-fourth of the working scientists on the NASA advising board during the development and research of the James Webb Space Telescope were University of Rochester graduates and faculty.
