The Institution of Pittsburgh is a prestigious public research university in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, that was founded in 1787 as the Pittsburgh Academy. In 1908, it was renamed The University of Pittsburgh after moving to its current home in the city's Oakland area. After joining the Commonwealth System of Higher Education in 1966, it was a private university until 1966. On its urban Pittsburgh site, it has 17 undergraduate and graduate schools and colleges.Pittsburgh is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU), which is comprised of 63 of North America's top doctorate-granting research schools.
