The Institution of Pittsburgh is a prestigious public research university in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, that was founded in 1787 as the Pittsburgh Academy. In 1908, it was renamed The University of Pittsburgh after moving to its current home in the city's Oakland area. After joining the Commonwealth System of Higher Education in 1966, it was a private university until 1966. On its urban Pittsburgh site, it has 17 undergraduate and graduate schools and colleges.Pittsburgh is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU), which is comprised of 63 of North America's top doctorate-granting research schools. Pittsburgh has long been noted for its liberal arts education and achievements in the fields of science, research, the humanities, and other fields.

The 145-acre campus has 23,466 full-time and 1,087 part-time undergraduate students, as well as 7,280 full-time and 1,911 part-time Graduate/Doctoral students. The university got research funds from the National Institutes of Health in 2018, making it the third-largest beneficiary of federally supported health research funding among U.S. universities.

According to the National Science Foundation, the institution spent $1 billion on research and development in 2018, putting it in 14th place in the country. Leading magazines have named the university one of the best research educational institutions and the 'best value' in higher education.
