The University of North Texas (UNT) is a public research and higher education institution in Texas that was founded in 1890. UNT began as a private, non-sectarian institution with 70 students operating out of a hardware store. North Texas State University was given university status in 1961. The university's current name was adopted in 1988. The Universities Research Association (URA), the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), and the Oak Ridge Associated Universities are all members of the University of North Texas System (ORAU). Since 1992, it has been a member of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU). It is affiliated with NCAA Division I and competes in the Conference USA.
The main university campus, which is located in Denton, spans 1,200 acres. In 2023, the university will open a satellite campus in Frisco, about 41 kilometres from the main campus. Academic buildings, administrative offices, labs, and research centres are all state-of-the-art at the institution. A multicultural centre, medical and fitness centres, cafeterias, and lounges are among the other on-campus amenities. It has 14 living halls, which can accommodate a total of 5,620 students.
The university library has a total of 2,395,327 print volumes and 1,306,773 digital resources covering a wide range of subjects. Football, basketball, soccer, golf, cross-country, softball, volleyball, tennis, swimming, and diving are just a few of the sports offered at UNT. Under the name Scrappy, it has 16 varsity teams that represent the institution in numerous intercollegiate tournaments and competitions. The University of North Texas has two schools and eleven colleges, as well as a science and mathematics academy. About 105 undergraduates, 88 postgraduates, and 38 doctoral degree programmes are available at the university. It prepares students for careers in the arts, science, health, liberal arts, social sciences, research, journalism, politics, entertainment media, music, tourism, management, education, business, engineering, computer science, and public service, as well as management, education, business, engineering, and computer science.
UNT is a major university with 38,154 students and more than 4,600 faculty members of various ethnic backgrounds. Over 31,405 undergraduate students and nearly 6,676 postgraduate students have enrolled in various undergraduate programmes. Around 2,520 international students from 50 countries attend the university, accounting for 6.6 percent of the total student population. Teaching associates and full- and part-time affiliates make up UNT's academic workforce. At the university, the student-to-faculty ratio is 24:1.
