About University of Illinois Springfield (UIS)

The University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) was founded in 1960 by a group of central Illinois residents who formed the Springfield Committee for Higher Education with the goal of establishing a university in the state capital. Sangamon State University (SSU) was established by law passed in 1969. In 1970, SSU began operations. In 1995, the University of Illinois and SSU amalgamated to establish UIS. The university is currently made up of four colleges and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). Many of its programmes are also approved by professional accrediting organisations.

The UIS campus, which spans 746 acres in Springfield, Illinois, is located in the southeast corner of the city. The University of Illinois period, Legacy Campus, and SSU Permanent Construction are the three separate locations. Brookens Library and Public Affairs Centre, which includes Sangamon Auditorium, a Performing Arts Center, and a large concert hall, is located at SSU Permanent Construction. Students can choose from a variety of comfortable accommodation options on campus, including residence halls, shared bedroom housing, apartments, and townhouses. A cricket field, challenge course, tennis court, gymnasium, Disc Golf Course, Kiwanis Stadium Basketball Court, and a recreation centre are among the recreational facilities available.

UIS provides 31 bachelor's degrees, one doctoral degree, and 20 master's degrees in subjects such as business, management, education, human services, accounting, computer science, liberal arts, sciences, psychology, administration, and public affairs, among others. It also has 1,681 online majors to choose from. Around 4,700 students attend the university, including over 900 online students and over 300 international students. There are 220 full-time faculty members and 129 part-time faculty members on staff. It has a 15:1 student-to-professor ratio, which is rather excellent. There are about 85 student groups and clubs at UIS. It offers exchange possibilities in 55 countries, including Australia, Canada, Botswana, China, Germany, The Gambia, Greece, Japan, Jamaica, Mexico, Poland, Nicaragua, the United Kingdom, and Romania, thanks to its extensive international links.
