About University at Albany-SUNY

The University of Albany is an open research university that was founded in 1844. The university opted to reform its academic organisation in 1905, and it eventually became New York City's first institute of higher education to award a bachelor's degree. The university began awarding master's degrees in 1913. The university's first class began in the year of its founding, with two faculty members and 29 students. The State University of New York (SUNY) was founded in 1948. In 1962, the university established a PhD degree programme.

The Uptown Campus and the Downtown Campus are the two parts of the campus. The Uptown Campus, which is located at 1400 Washington Avenue in Albany and was constructed by renowned American architect Edward Durell Stone in 1961-62, is the primary campus. The structures have a dramatic, unified design with domes, towers, and fountains. The campus houses the main library, the Performing Arts Centre, and the Atmospheric Sciences Research Centre. The other three libraries are also on the premises, in addition to the main library.

The Downtown University, which is the second portion of the campus, was built in 1909. The Rockefeller College of Policy and Public Affairs, the College of Information Technology, the School of Criminal Justice, and the School of Social Welfare are all located on this site. In addition, the Cancer Research Centre and the School of Public Health have moved to a new campus, the Health Sciences Campus, which spans 87 acres of land.

There are nine schools and colleges at the institution. The extensive course catalogue is divided into numerous institutes and centres. Students have a lot of options when it comes to choosing courses based on their areas of interest, thanks to the wide range of subjects available. The Centre for Applied Historical Research, the Biological Imaging Centre, the Centre for Economic Research, the Centre for Jewish Languages, the Centre for Astronomical Observatory, the Centre for X-Ray Optics, and the Centre for Neuroscience Research are only a few of the well-known institutions. There are 13,598 undergraduate students and 4,346 postgraduate students in the undergraduate programme. The university has a total enrollment of 17,944 students. It is affiliated with the American Public Law University and the State University of New York.
