Stony Brook University, founded in 1957 as a college for secondary school math and science teachers, has grown to become one of the country's most important centres of learning and scholarship. From the 1970s forward, the university evolved from a traditional university to a research institution. There were effective graduate programmes and scientific breakthroughs at this time, such as the development of magnetic resonance imaging. The institution improved and expanded in areas including undergraduate education, student and residential life, and intercollegiate athletics during the 1980s.
Stony Brook University was ranked among the top 100 research universities in the United States by US News & World Report in 1998. The Association of American Universities accepted this university as a member in 2001. This university is also a public research university with sea-grant and space-grant status. This university is 60 miles from Manhattan and near to Atlanta's beaches. On Long Island's northern shore, Stony Brook University is spread out over 1,039 acres.
