San Francisco State University (SFSU) has been a state university since 1972, but it was founded in 1899 as a state-run institution. It is one of the California State University system's 23 universities. In Romberg Tiburon Center, Downtown Campus, Sierra Nevada Field Campus, and the main campus at Holloway Ave., there are six academic colleges and four campuses.
