Rice University is one of America's private research universities, based in Houston, Texas, the country's fourth largest and most diversified metropolis. Rice is nestled between the world's largest medical institution, the Texas Medical Center, and one of the country's greatest museum districts.
Rice University, which is spread over 300 forestry acres, is known for its campus attractiveness and has been recognised a "Tree Campus USA" by the Arbor Day Foundation. In 1912, Rice's first class of students enrolled.
The School of Architecture, Susanne M. Glasscock School of Continuing Studies, George R. Brown School of Engineering, School of Humanities, Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business, The Shepherd School of Music, Wiess School of Natural Sciences, and School of Social Sciences all offer degree programmes at Rice University. There are a number of other multidisciplinary academic programmes at Rice University.
Graduate education at Rice University is divided into two types: research-based programmes that lead to M.A., M.S., and various doctoral degrees, and professional master's programmes that give advanced coursework and lead to degrees in specialised subjects.
As part of the Ph.D. programme, many research-based Master of Science degrees are available. There are no stand-alone degrees available, although students can receive an M.S. while working toward a Ph.D. Rice's doctoral programmes are fully supported and include a significant stipend to help with living expenses. Doctoral programmes prepare students to be the world's foremost experts on a topic.
Tuition-based professional master's programmes are meant to provide students with a competitive advantage in industry, government, or law in as little as 1-2 years.
