Mississippi State Institution is an open research university that is officially known as Mississippi State University for Agriculture and Applied Science. The land-grant university was officially certified as Mississippi Agricultural & Mechanical College in 1878 and accepted its first student batch in 1880, after being established by Congress through the Morrill Act (1862).
The university is spread out over 4,200 acres and houses about 730 structures. The university's grounds include grasslands, farms, and woods. Aside from these, the institution has eight colleges. More than 175 graduate, baccalaureate, and specialty degree programmes are available. The university is the only one in Mississippi that offers accredited veterinary medicine and architecture programmes.
It is the state's largest school by enrolment, with a nationally and globally varied student body of more than 22,000 students at its central campus. In addition to these schools and colleges, the university has an off-campus facility in Meridian that offers graduate and undergraduate degree programmes. Apart from that, the College Of Engineering in Vicksburg, in collaboration with the US Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station, offers master's programmes in science to students. There are also a number of farms outside of the primary site that are used for agricultural research. The university's intercollegiate athletics teams compete in NCAA Division I and are known as the Mississippi State Bulldogs. The university was a founding member of the SEC in 1932.
Aside from that, there are around 300 student clubs and organisations at the university. The Maroon Band, MSU Road Runners, Alumni Delegates, Maroon VIP, Music Maker Productions, Lambda Sigma, the Engineering Student Council, Orientation Leaders, Arnold Air Society, the Black Student Alliance, the Stennis-Montgomery Association, the Baptist Student Union, and many others are among the well-known groups.
