Columbia University is a private research university that was founded in 1754 by George II of Great Britain and is the 5th oldest institution of higher education in the United States. It is also one of the nine colleges that were established prior to the country's independence. The university was first known as King's College, until being renamed Columbia University in 1784. Many university researchers and scientists have pioneered groundbreaking research and discoveries, including nuclear piles, brain-computer interfaces, and nuclear magnetic resonance. The earliest evidence of tectonic plates and continental drift was also discovered by the geologists.
Columbia University is the second largest landowner in the United States, with its headquarters in Morningside Heights, New York. Mead, White, and McKim, the architects, created the campus. It is wonderfully constructed and spans 36 acres of land. The library is also noted for having a neo-classical design and housing over 11 million volumes and research papers. It has a number of well-known volumes inscribed with the names of prominent writers, intellectuals, and philosophers. The campus also has housing facilities and is close to restaurants, cafes, medical stores, general stores, and other places where students can get basic essentials.
Columbia University has a partnership with Caltech, Yale, and MIT, which gives a wide range of opportunities for students to learn about diverse subjects. American Studies, Anthropology, Architecture, Business, Philosophy, and History are among the subjects covered by the academic system. Drama and Theatre Arts, Dance, Film and Media Studies, Music, and Visual Arts are some of the most popular and creative topics.
