Fresno State Normal School was founded in 1911 as California State University, Fresno. The first president of the college was Charles Lourie McLane. In 1949, it was renamed Fresno State College and transferred to its current location in 1956. In 1972, the university was given its current name. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) currently accredit the university (NCATE). The Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET has authorised its engineering programmes, while the AACSB has certified its business programmes.

The university's campus, which is located in Fresno, California, spans 388 acres, with the university farm encompassing 1,011 acres. The campus boasts a high-tech infrastructure and offers a variety of amenities to students. A large library, high-tech computer labs, roomy classrooms, a bookstore, and many study areas are among the academic amenities provided by the campus. Students also have a variety of dining alternatives on campus, with Starbucks, Taco Bell Express, Subway, and other cafeterias and restaurants. Aside from academic and dining facilities, the campus provides pleasant lodging and sports facilities such as swimming, racquetball, weightlifting, table tennis, athletics, and more.

The university is divided into eight schools and colleges, each of which offers a variety of doctoral, graduate, and undergraduate programmes in fields such as agriculture, anthropology, arts, design, business, sciences, communication, computer science, engineering, the environment, journalism, and others. The institution has a total of 25341 students and about 2,500 employees. Students can take advantage of a variety of career services at the university, including career counselling, interview preparation, and resume creation. It makes every effort to provide great job and internship possibilities for its students and to assist them to attain their objectives.
