Heriot-Watt University was founded as the first university for mechanical engineering in 1821. It went through a number of subsequent name changes and was named Heriot-Watt University in 1966, attaining university status. The university is UK's eighth-oldest institution of higher education.
It is one of the UK's 39 old universities comprising the distinctive second-cluster after Oxbridge (Cambridge, Oxford) of elite universities.
The university has five campuses located in Edinburgh, the Scottish Borders, Dubai, Malaysia and Orkney.

The University's Petroleum Engineering Institute is located on its Edinburgh campus.
The Scottish Borders Campus at Heriot-Watt in Galashiels is home to the School of Textile and Design at the university.
Heriot-Watt's campus in Stromness, Orkney, is home to the International Centre for Island Technology (ICIT).
Heriot-Watt was named International University of the Year by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018 in recognition of its global presence and impact
