The Coventry College of Design, established in 1843, served as the foundation for Coventry University. It was given a new name—Coventry College of Art—after combining with Rugby College of Engineering Technology, Lanchester College of Technology, and Lanchester College of Technology. The resulting organisation was initially known as Lanchester Polytechnic, then changing its name to Coventry Polytechnic, and was established as Coventry University in 1992. The Phoenix, a mythical bird that represents how the city of Coventry rebuilt itself after World War II, serves as the university's logo.
