Aberystwyth University was founded in 1872 and was the first university institution to be established in Wales.
Spread over three campuses, the Penglais University and the Llanbadarn University are located close to the main town. Its Gogerddan campus is home to the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences, a world-class research and teaching center It has also recently opened a Mauritius branch campus offering degrees in accounting and finance, business, computer science and law.
Penglais University Campus was the first in Wales to win the Green Flag Award for the high quality of its environment.
In 2015, Aberystwyth was awarded the title of 'Greatest Town' by the Academy of Urbanism for its shops, restaurants, nightlife and cosmopolitan atmosphere.
Aberystwyth has also been recognized by the leading newspaper as one of the top five safest places to study in the United Kingdom, with some of the lowest crime rates in the country.

The University is spread over three campuses, Penglais, Llanbadarn and Gogerddan. The Penglais Campus is home to 12 of the 17 departments of the University, as well as most of the student residences. Penglais and Llanbadarn campuses are conveniently located within a stone's throw from the city, and the Gogerddan Campus is the research center of the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences.
