About Our Program
The chemical engineering undergraduate program includes a rigorous curriculum incorporating chemistry, physics, biology and mathematics. We teach students how these disciplines are used in careers in energy, smart materials, biotechnology, industrial-scale production, electronics, and nanotechnology. Our technical electives incorporate the latest research and development for real-world application.
Students in our program get hands-on engineering experience in their very first year, starting with Introduction to Engineering Design (ENES 100). This project-based course requires them to work in interdisciplinary teams to design, build and deploy an autonomous hovercraft capable of meeting a set of very challenging specifications.
ChBE offers great opportunities for undergraduate research in our own laboratories and experiences that often make our alumni more desirable to employers and graduate schools. Some of our undergraduates have published papers, contributed to book chapters, and won scholarships and awards for their research.
Our students have also honed their skills on our Chem-E Car team, which designs and builds chemical reaction-powered model vehicles for regional and national competitions; and as members of Engineers Without Borders, which helps people around the world gain access to clean water and renewable energy.
Outside of the classroom, we have an active student chapter of AICHE (the American Institute of Chemical Engineers) and a ChBE honors club. Students are also able to cultivate their personal lives by participating in all kinds of activities on campus, including music, arts, games, languages, equestrian club, NCAA and intramural sports, and even Humans vs. Zombies!
