Course content
Our teaching is led by our research and addresses real-world issues. The course progresses from broad to specialist topics, comprising two thirds Sociology modules and one third Criminology modules.
You'll engage with key aspects of crime and deviance from a range of academic perspectives, while also having the opportunity to study wider sociological themes and research.
As you progress you'll focus your studies, choosing option modules to develop your expertise. In your final year you'll undertake independent research leading to your dissertation.
Academic qualification equivalents

Typical offers for Standard XII (awarded by a recognised Board of Higher Secondary Education) are based on an average score ranging between 75% to 85%.
- An average score of 85% is comparable to A*AA/AAA
- An average score of 80% is comparable to AAB/ABB
- An average score of 75% is comparable to BBB

For CBSE and CISCE boards we will accept the overall average score from the best four subjects. For other State Boards, we will accept the overall score from the best five subjects. Good A level and International Baccalaureate grades are also accepted. Actual grades required will vary by course.
Other post-school qualifications may also be considered for entry to York on a case by case basis.
English language requirements
- IELTS :6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in each component.
- TOEFL:87 overall, with a minimum of 21 in each component.
- PTE :61, with a minimum of 55 in each component.
