OVERVIEW

The BSc Paramedic Science course at UWS will provide you with the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills for a challenging career in frontline emergency care. You will develop confidence and compassion to deliver high-quality emergency care in a range of settings. On successfully completing our course you will be eligible to apply for registration as a Paramedic with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Theory and clinical simulation skills learnt at our state-of-the-art campus will be applied and integrated into practical settings. Practice-based opportunities will be both within the Scottish Ambulance Service and in a range of associated health and social care settings across Ayrshire and Arran, Dumfries and Galloway and Lanarkshire.

Opportunities to work with a team of healthcare professionals will develop an integrated approach to health and social care required for contemporary paramedic practice.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

BSc Paramedic Science has been designed to integrate theory and practice-based education. On successful completion, you will be proficient to undertake the full scope of paramedic practice and be eligible to apply to the HCPC to become a registered Paramedic.

The programme has been designed to meet the changing needs of the populations’ health and social care services.

The BSc Paramedic Science programme will provide students exposure to simulated practice and to a range of healthcare settings providing opportunities to practice autonomously and as a member of a range of clinical, integrated health and/or social care teams. It will also incorporate interdisciplinary learning bringing together students from a range of biomedical science, health and nursing programmes.

PLACEMENT OPPORTUNITIES

All students will undertake up to 2250 hours of practice-based education over the three years split equally between ambulance and non-ambulance placements.  A range of experiences will ensure exposure to different service users and health professionals and support progression from dependent to independent practice.

While on practice-based learning students will be full time and experience the 24 hour/7 day continuum of care.

COURSE DETAILS

The course will be modular in structure combining classroom-based face-to-face lectures, workshops and tutorials, simulated practice learning, clinical skills and practice-based education.

Jobs

On successfully completing our course you will be eligible to apply for registration as a Paramedic with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). An experienced Paramedic can progress to team leader or manager or you may wish to become part of a specialist team.

Further Study

BSc Paramedic Science will provide a foundation for lifelong learning and the recognition for the need for ongoing education and learning. For those graduates who would like to continue to a higher level of learning the degree qualification will provide them with an option for further study leading to postgraduate certificate or diploma or an MSc in a heath care related subject.
