About Filmmaking BA (hons) in University of Sussex
At Sussex, you’re taught by film producers and film scholars who help you develop both critical and practical skills around filmmaking. We combine theory and practice so you become a critically informed practitioner who can initiate innovative approaches and work across a range of roles.
You'll learn to produce both documentary and fiction films and develop a range of skills in producing, directing, cinematography, editing and sound. You'll also gain a critical understanding of film history and film theory.
We offer 24/7 access to specialist facilities – including edit suites, photographic studio, dubbing facilities and a foley studio – and a wide range of professional equipment is available to students via an online booking system, and is free to use for extended periods locally, nationally and internationally.

Your future career
At Sussex, you’re given the chance to develop further real-world skills outside the classroom. You can write for our student newspaper, or present a feature on our television channel or radio station. Masterclasses from alumni and industry professionals also prepare you for life after graduation.
You’ll learn how to use industry-standard software and equipment, and develop skills in video editing, photographic manipulation, digital design, animation and sound. You also build up a portfolio of work to show potential employers.
Academic qualification equivalents
- 80% from ISC Indian School certificate of Education (CISCE) or 80% from SSC All India Senior School Certificate Examination (CBSE)
English language requirements (one of the below):
- IELTS : 6.5 overall, including at least 6.0 in each component
- TOEFL : 88 overall, including at least 20 in Listening, 19 in Reading, 21 in Speaking, 23 in Writing.
- PTE : 62 overall, including at least 56 in all four skills.
