Course Details

The Psychology side of the course will help you if you wish to develop research in social, cognitive, biological, developmental and personality psychology due to the facilities and resources we have available.

Joint Honours in Psychology and Business can set you on a range of career paths that demand a combination of skills including organisational physical and mental health services, clinical psychology as well as more traditional business disciplines such as management, marketing and HR where psychological insight would be invaluable.  Students who want a career in Psychology must major in Psychology and ensure that they take sufficient Psychology modules to meet the requirements of British Psychological Society (BPS) Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC). Academic staff will be able to advise on the best route for individual students.

Stage one

Students will be introduced to the core disciplines that underpin the academic analysis of both courses. Stage one explores the introduction of Psychology and Business and provides an excellent foundation of knowledge for students to advance to stage two.

In Psychology, students must take three compulsory modules in the first year:

  • Introduction to Psychology
  • Becoming a Psychologist
  • Psychology in Practice

There are also three compulsory Business modules:

  • Introduction to Management
  • Business Environment
  • Business in Society

Stage two

Students have some choice at stage two and can decide which, if any subject to major in. Some degree of specialisation is possible at this stage and students can start to choose modules that will further their career aims whilst maintaining a broad education that allows for changes in direction. Modules take students into more detailed and developed areas, considering the wider issues and debates surrounding Psychology and Business.

In Business, the second stage places particular emphasis to introducing the two compulsory modules in the contrasting topic areas of Strategic Business Analysis and Operations Management. Students can then chose one further optional module from the following:

  • Managing Human Resources
  • Information Technology for Business
  • Issues in Small Business Entrepreneurship

In Psychology, joint honours students must complete a number of optional modules to attain the 60 credits that they need. Modules in this year include:

  • The Human Animal
  • The Psychology of Well Being
  • Cognitive Psychology

Stage three

At this stage, you will have the opportunity to develop specialised and intensive study on areas and aspects of Psychology and Business that you find particularly interesting.

Students, who have an even split on their courses; can choose to write a dissertation on either topic within their Joint Honours programme. The dissertation builds on and expands students’ prior knowledge of research methodology acquired at stage one and two. It aims to foster the development of expertise in methodology and skills in the planning, conduct and write-up of research reports. This form of independent, experiential learning will require students to ask logical questions to diagnose and define problems, generate and implement solutions and evaluate the effectiveness of their action-outcomes. It therefore develops in the students, the ability to work independently and to reflect on the research process.

Psychology at Stage three is made up of three chosen modules to make up the 60 credits needed. Some of the modules include:

  • The Psychology of Mental Health
  • Parapsychology and Anomalous Experiences
  • Forensic Psychology
  • Investigating and Applying Memory

Stage three Business includes one compulsory module ‘Debates in Strategic Management’ plus two elective modules. Some of those that can be chosen include:

  • Opportunity, Innovation and Entrepreneurship
  • Organisational Change
  • Strategic Information Systems

For further module information please refer to the Psychology Joint Honours award map and the Business Joint Honours award map.
