Our BA(Hons) Management in Tourism course has been specifically designed to provide a thematic and challenging educational progression for holders of Higher National Diploma, Certificate or Foundation Degrees in a Tourism subject area. This degree gives you an opportunity to develop an awareness of, and ability in, corporate management within the Tourism industry to prepare you for a successful management career.

The course examines management in the Tourism industry from a strategic perspective, in both a national and global context. Key themes are explored through specialist modules in Tourism which reinforce the vocational dimension of the programme. Personal and professional development is emphasised throughout the year thus enhancing employability skills and a commitment to continuing professional development.

OPPORTUNITIES

The three top-up programmes in either Events, Hospitality or Tourism allow for a great deal of flexibility in career choices, leaving students well placed for career opportunities throughout the international marketplace. The continued growth of this sector will guarantee a wealth of opportunities over the coming years.

Many of our graduates are working for large international organisations, whilst a significant number have chosen to work more locally in the UK Tourism, Event and Hospitality industry. Students have recently secured roles at British Airways, Blackpool FC, Co-operative Travel, Premier Inn, Marriott, Hilton, Disney and many others. Some of our students continue onto our excellent Master’s courses which cover a range of related subjects.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

A 3 year degree qualification typically comprises 360 credits and each 20 credit (a standard module) equates to 200 hours of study, which comprises of a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical sessions and independent study. Independent study is an important aspect of your degree course. The exact combination of study time will be detailed within your module descriptors, and will depend on your option choices.

Research- informed teaching allows us to offer fascinating and unique modules such as Dark Tourism which is optional for our Top Up students.

Students will, on average, attend between nine and twelve hours of lectures, workshops, seminars and group activities per week. Visits to appropriate sites and presentations by guest speakers are also included wherever possible. Personal study and research also forms an integral part of the course. The programme is designed to develop confidence and independence of learning in a progressive manner and encourage a reflective and critical approach to the process of learning about the Tourism industry.

The course is assessed by a combination of individual written assignments (course work, essays, reports), oral presentations, group projects, training sessions and end of year examinations. You can also complete a dissertation giving you the opportunity to undertake a large piece of independent research.
