Fire safety is emphasized in the context of the built environment and particularly its application to buildings.  This course is for students aiming for senior roles after graduation in policy and direction roles.  This requires some deeper attention to legal studies, risk management in the context of managing projects for fire safety problems for the built environment and related infrastructure. The education of the fire professional should cater for the many new developments and their associated problems occurring in the field of application. Innovation specifically cannot be covered in prescriptive solutions and hence the application of principles is the proposed method of solving problems. It is precisely the development of novel solutions within the often-contradictory constraints of safety, economy, law and technology which pose the Honours challenge. Integration across diverse fields in order to propose an acceptable design or management decision is the major feature of the degree. The course benefits from the activities of the University's Centre for Research in Fire and Hazard Sciences. The course demonstrates a strong, well co-ordinated research link, which contributes strongly to the relevance and currency of the content.

WHY STUDY THIS COURSE?

This degree has been developed in response to the reforms in fire safety regulations and recent high profile fire incidents. It emphasises the consideration of fire risk during the design, construction and occupation of a building, and is ideal if you are aiming for senior roles after graduation in the specialist fire safety companies, fire insurers, fire and rescue services, social housing providers and other complex estates. It will develop your knowledge in integrated design and management solutions aimed at reducing the fire risk and ensuring that if a fire does occur, appropriate active, passive and fire safety management systems are in place to protect people, property and the environment.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

A 3 year degree qualification typically comprises 360 credits and each 20 credit (a standard module) equates to 200 hours of study, which comprises of a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical sessions and independent study. Independent study is an important aspect of your degree course. The exact combination of study time will be detailed within your module descriptors, and will depend on your option choices.

Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, workshops, laboratory work, project work, case studies, site visits. The mix of teaching methods is designed to motivate and challenge you, considering different learning styles to maximise your potential. Personal study also forms an integral part of the course. You will learn by a variety of methods including innovative information and communication technologies and practical case studies based on research outcomes achieved by the School staff.

Assessment is by examination and/or coursework, eg group projects, modelling exercises or time-controlled assignments, short answer questions, essays, practical reports or tests, problem solving exercises, critical reviews or presentations.

There is an Industrial Liaising Committee for this course, involving a number of leading companies in fire safety engineering, fire risk management, fire safety management, fire risk assessment and Fire and Rescue Services.

The range of employment opportunities for students who hold an honours degree in Fire Safety and Risk Management is very wide. The design and safety management of buildings for industrial and commercial use is becoming more complex due to the ever-increasing awareness of health and safety needs in the working environment. Because this course is supported by an established research base and continues to demonstrate a strong, well-co-ordinated research link, the course content is highly relevant and current - which means our graduates are extremely desirable. Therefore, an ability to solve the problems of fire prevention and control is desirable. Our alumni find themselves in senior positions in fire safety management, fire risk management, fire risk assessment and fire safety consulting, and many are on their way to becoming senior fire safety officers. The course is intended to provide both skills and knowledge relevant to the management of private and public sector services or to continue their studies to Masters or PhD level.
