The cyber security sector is facing a significant skills gap at a time when threats and the legal and commercial consequences of inadequate security are increasing. Emerging application areas such as the Internet of Things and Smart Cities offer new benefits, but also new vulnerabilities to accidental or malicious actions.

Security is now a crucial part of your business, and consequently the demand for highly skills and knowledgeable professionals is increasing. This degree course will provide you with the skills and knowledge to build secure and compliant systems that meet your employer’s business objectives.

Cyber security is about understanding attack methods and learn how to protect against them. During the cyber security course, the students can gain skills in identifying and exploiting vulnerabilities in computer networks and systems, as well as learning how to protect them against hacker attacks. The students combine their interest in programming, computer networks and security to become the cyber security professional of the future.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

A 3 year degree qualification typically comprises 360 credits and each 20 credit (a standard module) equates to 200 hours of study, which comprises of a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical sessions and independent study. Independent study is an important aspect of your degree course. The exact combination of study time will be detailed within your module descriptors, and will depend on your option choices.

The Computing and Technology building has several computer labs that are open 24 hours per day and for 7 days of the week. Students will have access to specialist computing labs which have the latest open source and commercial tools related to cyber security.
