About Bsc Reproductive Biology in The University of Edinburgh
Reproductive biology aims to understand the scientific principles that govern reproduction in humans and other mammals.
You will study the requirements for reproduction, including:
- the production of sufficient numbers of viable gametes
- fertilisation
- implantation in a receptive uterus
- formation of a placenta that can sustain and nurture a baby
- delivery at full term
Advances in this field provided the knowledge behind assisted conception. It has also revolutionised reproductive medicine and veterinary practice.

In Years 1 and 2 of your BSc (Hons) degree, you will undertake a broad programme of study in biomedical sciences. This structure is shared by all our undergraduate Biomedical Sciences degree programmes.
You will be introduced to Reproductive Biology in your Year 1 and 2 compulsory courses.
Specialisation in Reproductive Biology will begin in Year 3. In your final year, you will focus on this discipline.
