Msci Mental Health And Psychological Wellbeing in Solent University (Southampton)
Mental health issues are increasingly being understood and recognised, and there is a real demand for skilled professionals who understand these issues and can work with people to improve their emotional wellbeing and quality of life.
This course provides students with a solid grounding in psychology before specialising in mental health. Students gain practical insights into assessing and working with people experiencing mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. Additionally, students explore the therapeutic techniques used to treat these problems and help people lead healthier, happier lives.
Optional modules cover everything from cognitive behavioural therapy and mindfulness through to applied psychopathology, enabling students to tailor learning according to their interests.
Employability is a key element of the course and students are expected to complete at least 80 hours of clinical contact time in their final year. Students will be supported in arranging a clinical placement drawing on the course team’s close links with the NHS and various charities.
The scientific aspects of a psychology course, including the application of a reasoned approach, problem solving and manipulation of data, provide useful tools for careers in healthcare, law enforcement, finance, IT and research. Knowledge of human behaviour and motivation, ability to critically analyse a problem, formulate a considered response, create an argument and generate new ideas lend themselves well to careers in a wide variety of sectors.
