Bsc (hons) Maritime Management Top-up in Solent University (Southampton)
Professional seafarers have a unique set of skills that are of great value to shipping companies. However, it is sometimes hard to make the transition from ship to shore as there can be a general lack of understanding and knowledge of business and management practice amongst professional seafarers. This one-year top-up degree aims to fill this gap and produce graduates who are highly employable for their knowledge of both shipping and the maritime business.
This degree forms part of the shipping and maritime business portfolio, which benefits from a large cohort of international students. This reflects the global nature of the maritime industry and enables students to develop an understanding of different cultural attitudes and approaches to business while growing their network of contacts worldwide.
To complement their studies, students are encouraged to attend the University’s Maritime Conference, which is a key highlight of the academic year. Senior professionals from the industry are invited to talk to current students, and our alumni also attend and share their career experiences. Additional events in the week focus on developing employability skills and culminate with a careers fair.
Staff who teach on the programme have a wide range of experience and knowledge. Students will benefit from the mixture of industry professionals and academics as well as from the international outlook of the team. To help develop a good understanding of the subject, staff place a strong focus on learning through application within the real world, demonstrating theory within practice.
