Description
The Sports & Exercise Medical Sciences BSc combines the underlying science of human performance and physical activity, with an understanding of the pathology of acute and chronic diseases. This provides students with the scientific knowledge that underpins the performance and recovery of elite athletes, and the prevention and management of disease/injury.
The course applies the latest science to sports and exercise – including physiology, psychology, biomechanics, biochemistry and nutrition – giving you the opportunity to study a breadth of scientific disciplines.
The clinical elements running through the course focus on the evidence-based impact of physical activity and lifestyle factors on public health and rehabilitation; offering clinically relevant learning which provides unique insights and support a route into a range of health-related careers.
You will learn through complimentary teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, problem- based learning, practical laboratory sessions, real/virtual dissection tables. In the first year, all modules are compulsory and in years 2 and 3 students have the choice of several optional modules depending their interests.
In year three, you will be given a choice of research project, which could be undertaken in one of our many world class research laboratories; with our NHS partners; or out in the field with professional sports teams.
Career prospects
Graduates will have a wide range of career opportunities relating to: the support and analysis of elite athletes, the rehabilitation of athletes/patients, public health, and academia - such as research and teaching. Students will also be in an excellent position to undertake further post-graduate study including: physiotherapy, sports nutrition, occupational therapy, clinical physiology, or medicine.
