About Bsc (hons) Environmental Civil Engineering in Glasgow Caledonian University

A Civil Engineer helps to make some of the most innovative structures in the world - the infrastructure for transport, energy, industry and commerce is the result of civil engineering.

The programme, which is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (ICE, IStructE, CIHT, IHE) and Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) is designed to produce graduates who are as comfortable with the engineering and technical aspects of the industry as they are with contracts management, planning and environmental protection.

Site visits are organised throughout the programme and have recently included the M74 motorway extension, the White Cart flood prevention scheme, new Forth Crossing and Whitelee Wind Farm. You may also attend a five-day study trip to Europe, linked to one of our Erasmus university partners.

Your career

Employment opportunities exist with civil engineering contractors and consultants engaged in road building, quarrying, construction of large buildings and bridge building. Local authority positions also exist in planning and the administration of major networks. Our graduates can take advantage of opportunities within sustainable development and engineering for resilience.

The degree is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation and the Institute of Highway Engineers) and fully satisfies the educational base for IEng Incorporated Engineer status. Visit www.jbm.org.uk for further information.

We are also accredited by CABE, and importantly, ENAEE the European Network for Accreditation of Engineering Education with an EUR-ACE label.

Teaching Method

First year students attend a five day course of construction skills at Inchinnan, near Glasgow. Second year students can travel further afield by taking part in a European study trip which will be partly funded. Students in their third year can take part in either an industrial placement or the Erasmus European study exchange. Alternatively, students can select the Managed Project learning module. We have recently introduced an initiative where our students spend a five day period at Constructionarium, a hands-on construction experience for students and young professionals, where they are involved in on-site planning as well as implementing a scaled down version of a major construction project such as the Kingsgate Footbridge or the Millau Viaduct.

Higher Secondary academic level qualification including English and Maths . Academic IELTS score of 6.0 (or equivalent) with no element below 5.5.
