This course aims to improve understanding of the impact of information systems on business processes and competitiveness in a global setting.

After people, information – about performance, products, services, customers, suppliers and competitors – is one of the most valuable assets in any business or organisation. In an era of Big Data, where the volume, variety and complexity of information is increasing, so too is the need for individuals who can help businesses make the most of technology to store, share and analyse large quantities of data to reveal new insights which can improve performance.

This course aims to improve understanding of the impact of information systems on business processes and competitiveness in a global setting. Covering areas such as IT services, cloud computing, database management, analytics and mobile technologies, you’ll be introduced to Systems, Applications and Products (SAP), the world’s leading provider of enterprise business applications and solutions.

Course information

The past decade has witnessed an explosion in the sophistication of big data platforms, often using web-based intelligence applications, in a range of diverse business situations – from the remarketing techniques incorporated into online advertising to personalised medicine practices being used to inform patient treatment.

As the complexity of information systems increases, the skills required by those managing them are becoming highly specialised, yet at the same time more broad-based. Information systems managers not only need to have advanced technical knowledge, but also critical management skills to analyse business needs, solve problems and ensure that the people, processes and practices within a business operate seamlessly.

On this course, we will explore the changing nature of information systems and the emerging technologies being used to harvest big data, including the new web-based applications based on in-memory, parallel computing paradigm and associated technologies, such as distributed file systems, SQL databases and cloud computing models.

We will explore the needs of modern businesses within today’s globalised world and how information systems can be developed to adapt. Using specialist software, there are opportunities to put information systems theory into practice, simulating real-world business problems. For example, using SAP to support business processes by creating a sales order.

Your Master’s project brings together the technical and management strands; you will undertake a real-world project or participate in collaborative research with University staff. Recent projects have covered topics as diverse as the effectiveness of IT strategies and knowledge management in the reduction of carbon footprint within the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMGG) industry.

The course is designed to prepare you for careers in the management of information systems within a business. As a postgraduate student, you can also receive support from our award-winning Faculty careers service, EEC Futures, which won the ‘Best Placement Service in the UK’ award at the National Undergraduate Employability Awards in 2015 and 2016.
