Why Psychology?
Psychology courses at Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU) emphasise psychology in the real-world. As a psychology student, you will seek to understand thoughts, emotions and behaviour. A degree in psychology gives you the chance to study an inherently fascinating and useful subject, while offering you many opportunities for future development and employment.
Our degree course has three key strengths: firstly, it is applied: we focus on psychology in the real world and provide insight into the practical application of psychology from early on; secondly, employability is embedded within our course from start to finish, helping you to build a broad range of academic, personal and career skills; finally, we are accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS). This ensures quality and gives you the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) required for many postgraduate psychology training courses (assuming a 2:2 or above and a pass in your final year project is achieved).
Who is this course for?
Psychology is a diverse and fascinating subject that deals with how we perceive the everyday world. This course is for you if you have studied the subject or a related social science before, or if you have a keen interest in the thoughts, emotions and behaviors of others and want to study them in a scientific way. Psychology at CCCU is applied which means we focus on psychology in the real world and provide an insight into the practical application of psychological knowledge from day one. As part of the course you will also have the opportunity to enjoy guest lectures and research seminars.
Work experience
In addition to curricular activity, we strongly encourage volunteering and graduate placements, and will help you connect with charities and organisations.
For single honours psychology students, we have a work-related and key skills module in year two to help you develop your employability skills. We also now offer an optional placement year between the second and third years of study, providing an additional opportunity to get to know the work of professional psychologists and develop practical skills.
What can i do next?
Many psychology graduates find employment in the caring professions, education, business and management, and other people focused occupations. Others pursue careers as applied psychologists, or as academics and researchers. Accreditation from the British Psychological Society gives graduates of the single honours or major routes the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC), which is the first step towards becoming a Chartered Psychologist. It allows graduates to pursue postgraduate vocational training in areas such as clinical psychology, educational psychology and health psychology.
