About Hair Design Year One in Waikato Institute of Technology (Wintec)
Summary
Students will gain essential skills in hairdressing and salon operation, to prepare for an apprenticeship or entry position in the hairdressing industry. This programme includes 120 hours of work-based training in a real salon environment.
Course content includes aspects of salon administration such as banking, reconciliation and stock control so students will develop a knowledge of retail hair products and the merchandising and selling skills that are essential in any salon business.
Students will also learn key hairdressing skills such as colouring, styling, and foiling. Classic and contemporary hair design are incorporated into all aspects of the training.
Career/further opportunities
Graduates of the programme will have the skills and knowledge to work as hairdressers, barbers, salon managers, or hair stylists.
Academic qualification equivalents
- AllāIndia Senior School Certificate or the Higher Secondary School Certificate with 50% or better in 4 subjects
English language requirements (one of the below):
- IELTS : Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5
- TOEFL : Score of 46 (with a writing score of 14)
- PTE : PTE (Academic) score of 42 with no band score lower than 36
New Zealand Living Expenses
You'll require between $20,000 and $25,000 a year ($380–480 per week) for housing/rent, food, transportation, phone bills, internet usage, and entertainment, in addition to your tuition and insurance fees. The average living expense will be the same for everyone, regardless of their tuition or course price. Please keep in mind that these are only suggestions; the Immigration New Zealand requirement is $15,000 per year including return travel or an additional $2,000.
