The subject areas of this programme correspond to the Departments of the Faculty, and to the research interests and activities within each and inter-disciplinary themes, in which guidance and supervision can be offered, and subject to the availability of resources as determined by the Faculty. Students typically follow a short directed reading component, deliver a presentation related to the research, and embark on the preparation of a dissertation, based on work of an advanced or original nature undertaken by them.

Learning outcomes

1. Knowledge and Understanding: 

By the end of the course the student will be able to:

- Discuss a research problem in a structured fashion as demanded by the relevant research methodologies.
- Demonstrate an advanced knowledge on the research activity being undertaken.
- Deliver learned contributions to the area under study.
- Identify and select the generic skills required to indulge in research activities by applying them effectively to fulfil research objectives.

2. Skills: 

By the end of the course the student will be able to:

- Search for existing knowledge from various sources.
- Critically review, analyse and discuss research papers.
- Compile a literature review.
- Define research problems and frame research hypotheses.
- Write research proposals and technical papers or reports.
- Apply research methodologies.
- Collect, analyse and evaluate experimental data.
- Deliver oral presentations on the work performed. 
- Describe the scientific work performed in a written manner by means of technical reports, publications and a dissertation.

Course intended for

This course is aimed at first-degree holders from the Faculty of Dental Surgery, and indeed from any other science faculties, to further their knowledge in a specific dentistry-related research field.

Career opportunites and access to further studies

The faculty also offers the facility to obtain a Doctor of Philosophy.

This degree will further prepare students for research on Dental sciences. The introduction of this course will enable the candidates to further their knowledge in selected topics.
