The Electronic Engineering degree is accredited by Engineers Ireland and is recognised internationally.
Students take the same modules in 1st, 2nd and 3rd year. In 4th year, students specialise in one of the following three
options:
- Electronic Engineering with Computers (COE)
- Electronic Engineering (EEG)
- Electronic Engineering with Communications (COM)
- Students who achieve a 2.2 grade (50%) minimum in 3rd year may choose the MEng stream
- There is a transfer pathway from 1st year MH201 Science to 2nd year MH304 Engineering for students who have taken Engineering Science, Computer Science, Mathematics and one other subject. Students must attain 50% in the first sitting of first year examinations. There is no limit on places.
- Through our research programmes, Electronic Engineering at Maynooth has developed world-class expertise in the area of mobile communications, biomedical diagnostics and technologies, and the intelligent control of large machines such as Robots or wave machines.
- Each of these areas is matched to rapidly growing industries and excellent job opportunities. By bringing this deep knowledge to all the undergraduate programmes, we provide our graduates with a world-class electronic engineering education but also a head start in these exciting and developing areas.
- Students progressing into the 5th year Master’s route, have the option in 4th year to complete one of the following: 6 month industry work experience / Erasmus or Research Internship or Project.
Course Structure
- Students take the same modules in first, second and third year
- 3rd year students complete 9 taught modules (5 credits each) over semester 1 & 2, and a community-based PBL (Project Based Learning) module (15 credits) in semester 2.
- Students have two progression routes out of the programme to qualification, depending on their grade average in third year
- In fourth year students specialise in one of the following three options, completing their degree with a BE honours:
- Electronic Engineering with Computers (COE)
- Electronic Engineering (EEG)
- Electronic Engineering with Communications (COM)
OR
Students with a minimum of 2:2 grade (50%) in 3rd year may complete a further 2 years to graduate with an ME in Electronic Engineering.
Industrial work experience is available to students in the 4th year of the 5 year Masters. Students may alternatively choose Erasmus, Study
Abroad or a Research Internship or Project (subject to availability).
Course Duration: 4 years
Career Options
- Our graduates are equipped to work in silicon chip manufacturing and design (e.g. Intel), communications companies and in the development of products closely combining hardware and software.
- Students have the opportunity to graduate after 5 years with an ME in Electronic Engineering (master’s level). This degree will exempt holders from any further written examination on the path to qualify as a Chartered Engineer. Beyond electronic engineering, our graduates have the software skills to work in most software companies, and the problem solving and mathematical skills for many roles in the financial and management sectors.
