Media Studies engages critically and practically with the nature of media, a vital skill in an era of fake news, selfies and viral videos, and where media industries are constantly expanding.
- You will study the principles and practices of audio-visual production and interactive web authoring, how to research and analyse media cultures, genres and industries, and the role of media in society and politics.
- Students engage in independent and group projects to develop their media practice and have a flexible range of optional modules to expand their critical understanding.
- Media Studies can be combined with Computer Science to develop a broad expertise in Media Technologies.
- Gain practical experience through hands-on instruction in both digital and audio-visual creative media practice.
- Learn about the impact of a range of media forms in society, culture and politics.
- Broaden your educational experience by studying Media Studies along with Arts subjects (such as languages, business, social sciences, computer science).
Course Structure
1st year
- 30 credits of Media Studies theory and practice modules
- Choose up to 2 additional Arts subjects (or Critical Skills) from groups 1-5 (max 1 per group)
2nd & 3rd year
- Media Studies as a Double Major or Major/Minor with 1 of your 1st year subjects
- Optional 10 credit Electives in 2nd year
Students may apply to study overseas after 2nd year (on Erasmus or Study Abroad) and graduate with a BA (International) after 4 years. See the International Studies website for details.

Career Options
- Graduates emerge with practical production and research skills, and a broad understanding of media dynamics. Many seek careers in television, radio, and film production, web design, media research, social media marketing, advertising and public relations.
- Our graduates have taken up positions at RTÉ Radio 1, Microsoft, BBC One and in marketing departments of large corporations. Others have become independent creative professionals in web design or film-making.
Postgraduate options currently include:
- MA in Critical and Creative Media, MA in Sociology: Internet and Society, MLitt and PhD research degrees.
