Program Description: 

The MFA New Media program provides graduate students the opportunity to explore innovative approaches to digital art and design through theoretical and practical scholarship. As a smaller program with high caliber students and first-rate digital facilities, the MFA in New Media offers an exceptional level of interaction with faculty who are practicing artists, designers, and scholars engaged in extensive collaboration and interdisciplinary research and production. Bolstered by prolific and national renowned fine arts and performance arts communities, the program offers student unique opportunities to contribute to the vibrant cultural like of the region.

The program offers students unique opportunities to contribute to the vibrant cultural life on campus and in the broader community of Lethbridge. MFA students are encouraged to augment their studio practice through interactions with other graduate programs in the Faculty of Fine Arts (Art, Music, and Drama). The University’s liberal arts focus offers opportunities to take courses and explore collaborations with the Humanities, Sciences, and Social Sciences.

Located in the U of L Centre for the Arts, the New Media Department is supported by excellent studios, labs, specialized workshops, and digital facilities, including:

  • Computer labs with advanced graphics workstations
  • Research lab with Cintiq screens and Wacom tablets
  • Motion Capture Studio
  • Game Research Lab
  • Cove Studio –VFX green screen infinity cyclorama
  • Digital Cinema Suite – professional editing and finishing rooms

The program supports areas of study in a range of creative practices including:

Program of Study

During the first year of the M.F.A. program, students complete course work. In the second year of the program, M.F.A. students focus on the research and production of the Thesis. The Thesis will be defended in the Final Oral Examination. The required courses for each M.F.A. - New Media major are: 

  • Fine Arts 5020 - Information Literacy for the Fine Arts (3.0 credit hours)
  • New Media 5148 - Graduate Studio I (6.0 credit hours)
  • New Media 5149 - Graduate Studio II (6.0 credit hours)
  • New Media 5151 - New Media Theory and History (3.0 credit hours)
  • Two electives at the 5000 level (6.0 credit hours)

Finding a Supervisor: 

Applicants to the MFA do not need to find a supervisor in advance of applying. Supervisors are not identified until after an application has been assessed by the departmental graduate education committee. Applicants can contact available faculty to discuss supervision prior to application, but it is not a requirement of the application.
