About Autism & Behavioural Science in St. Lawrence College

Overview

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can affect an individual’s ability to communicate, socialize and function effectively at home, school and in their community. Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) can be used to develop new skills including language, social and play skills, self-help skills, academics, motor skills, life skills and appropriate behaviour.

Students in this highly specialized program learn to use a variety of evidence-based approaches to develop the skills of individuals with ASD across the lifespan by reviewing relevant literature, developing intervention plans, implementing behaviour change programs, and collecting data to ensure intervention strategies effectively meet established goals.

Graduates:

• Understand the characteristics of the full spectrum of ASD and how human development occurs in the neuro-typical population;
• Know the range of evidence-based practices in autism treatment;
• Know how to complete curriculum-based assessments and functional assessments;
• Can plan, implement, and monitor interventions based on these assessment results;
• Show leadership in the workplace by contributing knowledge and skills for practical solutions related to the treatment of ASD.

As this is a graduate certificate program, students can expect an intensive workload. Classes combine theory with active learning experiences and group work. Field placements are available in a range of settings and some may require the use of a vehicle.

Career Opportunities

Graduates have been successfully employed as Instructor Therapists working 1:1 or in small groups to provide intensive behaviour intervention (IBI), as behaviour therapists and autism specialists in a variety of community settings, and in school boards. Career opportunities may be more abundant in some areas of the province than others.

Academic qualification equivalents

• Class 12 passed students from a recognized board including CBSE, CISCE or a state board
• All India Senior School Certificate or Higher Secondary Certificate/Standard 12 or Indian School Certificate (Year 12) as recognized qualifications
• Minimum 65% prerequisite average for six Grade 12U or 12M level courses including Grade 12 English at the U level
• Grade 11 Math at the C, U or M level - (Grade 12 MDM4U preferred)

English language requirements (one of the below):

• ELTS test results required with a minimum score of 6.0 overall, with a minimum score of 5.5 in each section, for entry to diploma and certificate programs; minimum score of 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 6.0 in each section, for entry to degree, graduate certificate and fast-track programs.
• PTE: Pearson Test of English Language scores of 55 or higher for entrance to diploma and certificate programs; minimum score of 60 for entry to degree, graduate certificate and fast-track programs.
