Widener University is a private, urban institution of higher education. Founded in 1821 as The Bullock School for Boys, the educational institution was constructed in Wilmington, Delaware. After 1892, it was known as Pennsylvania Military College, and in 1972 it was renamed Widener.
The main campus of Widener University is located in Chester, Pennsylvania, with additional campuses in Wilmington, Delaware, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and Exton, Pennsylvania. Students learn in a thriving community that has the feel of a second family. Its modern facilities include a television production studio, labs for nursing simulation, a finance lab, and laboratories for robotics engineering and computer science. More than 85 percent of students choose to live on campus in residence halls, fraternities, or sororities.
Widener University offers numerous majors and minors. The student-to-faculty ratio at Widener is 13:1, and 91% of the full-time faculty hold doctorates or the highest degree in their field. All Widener University undergraduates have the opportunity to earn a Leadership Certificate by attending 18 one-hour workshops and writing a brief reflection on the experience. Since the program's inception in the fall of 2013, nearly one thousand students and staff have attended at least one workshop. The workshops are led by the Oskin Leadership Institute and emphasise a strategy to build students' character, make them more engaged citizens, and assist them in initiating positive change in their community or among their peers.
Students are considered for merit scholarships and grants based on their academic achievements, diverse talents, and skillsets after submitting an application to Widener. Annually, Widener provides substantial financial aid to first-year, full-time students with financial need. Notably, the average merit award for a new applicant is $105,000 over four years, while the average merit award for a transfer student is $17,000 per year.
Benjamin P. Ablao, Jr., an independent filmmaker and actor, Dawn Marie Addiego, a New Jersey state senator, and Richard Alloway, a Pennsylvania state senator since 2006, are notable alumni.
