Fairmount College, a Congregational college, founded Wichita State University in 1895. The college was renamed the Municipal University of Wichita in 1926, making it the first municipal university west of the Mississippi River. The current name of the university was given to it in 1964. The Kansas Board of Regents has granted WSU affiliation. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is the institution's sports affiliation (NCAA).
Students receive knowledge and credentials to prepare for happy lives and careers on the university's beautiful 330-acre main campus, which is a supportive, constantly expanding learn-work-live-play environment. On a hilltop overlooking downtown Wichita, the main campus is located in North Fairmount. Administrative offices, academic buildings, recreational spaces, sporting facilities, and student homes are all located on the campus. The Rhatigan Student Center, located in the heart of campus, is the social core of university life. Aside from that, the university has two other satellite campuses in Maize and Derby where students can take programmes.

For research, learning, and teaching, the university libraries have over a million printed volumes, 70,000 journal subscriptions, and over 130 electronic database resources. On campus, the institution provides a number of housing halls where students can stay.
