The Institution of Massachusetts is a public research university in Amherst, Massachusetts, founded in 1863. UMass Amherst was placed 24th in the United States among public universities. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Madeleine Blais, Nobel Laureate Craig Mello of UMass' medical school, who won the 2006 award for medicine, and novelist and National Book Award finalist Andre Dubus III of UMass Lowell, as well as former Poet Laureate Ted Hughes of UMass Amherst, are among the university's faculty.
