About University of Maryland

The University of Maryland, located in College Park, Maryland, is a well-known public research university. It was founded in 1856 and is the flagship university of the University System of Maryland. It is the Washington Metropolitan Area's largest university. The academic schedule at the university is semester-based. The Department of Homeland Security, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and the National Institutes of Health all finance research at the institute. The college of arts and humanities, the college of natural and agricultural resources, and the college of behavioural and social sciences are only a few of the university's departments.

It is one of the most prestigious colleges in both the Washington metropolitan area and the state, with over 41,000 students hailing from more than 50 states and 118 countries across the world. About 200 degree programmes are offered by the 12 schools and colleges, with 92 undergraduate programmes, 107 master's degrees, and 83 doctoral programmes.

According to U.S. News & World Report, admissions are more selective. There were 28,301 applications for the 2019 class, but only 12,637 were accepted, resulting in 3,937 students enrolled at the university. The university's application process has been based on the model used by the top 130 private and public universities, as given by The Coalition for Affordability, Success, and Access, since the beginning of 2017-18. As College Park has grown in stature, the admissions process has become increasingly demanding, and it is now ranked ninth among the most prestigious public institutions in the United States.

It is a member of the Big Ten Conference, one of the country's oldest collegiate sporting conferences. From New Jersey through Nebraska, the Big Ten Conference contains the flagship public university in each of the 11 states. The University of Maryland is also a member of the Committee of Institutional Cooperation, an academic body that includes the Big Ten universities and the University of Chicago, and whose members spent more than $10 billion on research in 2012. Noble prizewinners are among the University faculty, demonstrating the high quality of education provided to pupils.
