The University of Iowa was founded in 1847 and is a public research university in Iowa. It is the state's oldest and second-largest university. It began operations in 1855 with students residing in the Old Mechanics Building, which is now Seashore Hall. The university is a member of the Universities Research Association, the Big Ten Academic Alliance, and the Association of American Universities. The institution is affiliated with NCAA Division I in sports. On a campus of 1,880 acres, students have access to state-of-the-art academic, recreational, and housing facilities. The campus is divided into western and eastern parts by the River Iowa, which flows through it.
The library at the University of Iowa is the largest in the state. Its library system includes the Central Library, the Law Library, the Hardin Library for Health Sciences, and five departmental libraries. It contains over five million bound volumes, over two hundred thousand rare books, and approximately one thousand historical manuscripts. In addition, the library has a collection of culinary arts, scripts for television and film, comic books, and science fiction. The university's 11 colleges offer courses in 200 academic disciplines, including medicine, dentistry, education, engineering, law, the arts, the sciences, aerospace, public health, business, computer science, and management. In addition, it offers programmes in social work, strategic communications, and the liberal arts.
There are approximately 500 student organisations and clubs at the institution, focusing on games, sports, politics, lifestyle, dance, music, theatre, and other activities. There are 22 Hawkeyes sports teams that participate in various intercollegiate competitions. The university's student body is comprised of students from all 50 U.S. states and 115 countries around the globe. Currently, the university has approximately 32,948 students, including 23,989 undergraduates and 8,959 graduate students. There are approximately 2,060 academic staff members who are distinguished researchers, savvy businessmen, health care professionals, and Pulitzer Prize laureates. The ratio of students to faculty at the university is 16 to 1.
The university maintains a network of over 250,000 alumni worldwide. James Van Allen, the renowned physicist who invented the two radiation belts that encircle the earth, is an illustrious University of Iowa alumnus. Other notable alumni include B. J.
