The University of Houston (abbreviated as UH) was founded in 1927 as Houston Junior College. It is a public research-focused higher education institution. In 1934, it became a university, and in 1963, it became a state institution. It became a part of the newly formed University of Houston System in 1977. The university has been upgraded to Tier One status by the Carnegie Foundation.
