SUNY, or State University of New York at New Paltz, was founded in 1828 and granted academy status five years later. New Paltz Classical School was its original name, and it offered writing, arithmetic, reading, Latin, and Greek at the time. The building was renovated and rebuilt in 1884, following which it became a state school that trained teachers for New York state public schools. In 1938, the institute was recognised as a full-fledged college with a four-year programme.
It now provides graduate and undergraduate programmes. The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, School of Business, School of Education, School of Fine & Performing Arts, School of Science & Engineering, and graduate school are among the schools and colleges that make up New Platz. New Paltz offers almost 100 undergraduate and more than 50 graduate degree programmes.
