Purdue University, established in 1869, is a public research university with a main campus in West Lafayette, Indiana. The first structures on campus were constructed in 1874, including the Boiler and Gas House, the Military Hall and Gymnasium, the Ladies Hall, Purdue Hall, and the Pharmacy Building. Six professors and 39 pupils begin school in 1874. John Bradford Harper became the first graduate with a master's degree in chemistry the following year. The inaugural issues of the Purdue yearbook, the Debris, and the student newspaper, the Exponent, were published in 1889. Purdue University Airfield was founded in 1934 as the country's first university-owned airport.
