Northern Illinois Institution is a public research university located in the state of Illinois. Northern Illinois State Normal School was founded in 1895 as part of Illinois Governor John P Altgeld's expansion of the state's system for training college-educated teachers. The institution has seven colleges that award degrees. The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, American Council on Education, Association of State Colleges and Universities, Council of Graduate Schools, and Universities Research Association all have institutional membership or other links with the university and its colleges.
The main campus of the institution is in Dekalb, and it has a 765-acre combination of architecture and magnificent natural spaces. It provides students with a standard university education. In addition to Chicago, Rockford, Hoffman Estates, and Naperville, the institution has satellite centres.
The university's teacher certification, business, visual and performing arts engineering, and nursing programmes are all nationally accredited for fulfilling high academic quality requirements. With over 100 courses to choose from, NIU has something for everyone. It is also home to the College of Law. The Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities is a member of the university. The institution is expanding its Accelerator Technology programmes. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has designated the institution as a high-level research institute of higher education, based on its academic and research programmes. The Carnegie Foundation has classified the university as a 'RU/H: Research Universities (High Research Activity)'.
The Moscow Art Theatre School has a partnership with the university's School of Theatre and Dance. Graduate students spend a month in Moscow for training, while undergraduate students take part in a semester-long programme. Several initiatives are offered by the university's Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management to enrich the lives of students living and learning on campus. Many dance events, art exhibitions, theatre productions, and music concerts are organised and hosted by the University's College of Visual and Performing Arts.
