The New York State Education Department created Long Island University (LIU) in Brooklyn in 1926. The Middle States Commission on Higher Education has granted it accreditation (MSCHE). Various specialised accreditation agencies, such as the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), and the American Psychological Association Commission on Accreditation, have also given their approval to the university's various academic programmes, schools, and colleges.
LIU Brooklyn is the university's initial campus, with nine academic buildings, a sports and leisure complex with athletic fields, an adjacent parking facility, and one on-campus and two off-campus residential complexes. It also houses LIU Pharmacy, which was created in 1891 and is the university's oldest school. In addition, the school offers LIU Global, a four-year undergraduate degree programme that allows students to live and study in eight different countries over the course of eight semesters. Kumble Theater and the NCAA Division I Blackbirds are also located on the campus of LIU Brooklyn. LIU Post is the university's second and largest campus, located in Brookville. LIU has four other campuses in Westchester and Rockland counties: one in Brentwood, one in Riverhead, and two in Hudson.
Accounting, theatre, and cinema, sciences, business, communication, computer science, arts, education, health science, journalism, nursing, psychology, pharmacy, and sports are among the nearly 500 graduate, undergraduate, and doctoral degree programmes and certificate courses offered by LIU. It has about 20,000 students on all of its campuses, including a sizable number of international students. Over 500 notable faculty members teach at the university, including Fulbright Scholars, Academy Award winners, award-winning authors, prominent journalists, and world-renowned scientists. It has an 11:1 student-to-faculty ratio.
