In the present-day town of Trinity, Quakers and Methodists founded Duke University in 1838. It is a privately owned research institution that relocated to Durham, North Carolina in 1892. There is a marine lab for students to explore on the site, which spans 8,693 acres of land on three adjoining campuses in Durham and Beaufort.
The main campus was planned by Julian Abele, who incorporated Gothic architecture and placed Duke Chapel in the centre. Georgian-style architecture can be seen on the east campus, while Gothic architecture can be found on the west campus. Trinity College of Arts and Sciences, Duke Kunshan University, and Pratt School of Engineering are among the university's 12 institutes and institutions, however only three provide undergraduate programmes.
Duke University provides 53 majors and 52 minor options in engineering, allowing students to create their own engineering degree. The university also offers a total of 23 certificate programmes. Students can pursue a second major, minor, or certificate in addition to their major. As of 2019, Duke University has a total student body of 9,569 graduate and professional students and 6,526 undergraduates.
Students are required to reside on campus for the first three years by the administration in order to engage with other students and establish a sense of unity within the university. On campus, there are approximately 400 clubs and organisations for students to join. The Duke University Union (DUU) is the school's principal organisation, serving as the foundation for academic, social, and cultural life.
