Cornell University, located in Ithaca, New York, was founded in 1865 as a private endowed, statutory Ivy League research university. Morrill Hall was the first structure constructed on Ithaca's main campus in 1868. The University was the first to establish four-year programmes in hotel administration and industrial and labour relations. Cornell University also conferred the world's first journalism degree, the nation's first veterinary medicine degree, and the first doctorates in electrical and industrial engineering. Furthermore, Cornell's arXiv.org was the first to publish the solution to one of mathematics' most famous puzzles, the Poincaré Conjecture.
Ithaca, a historic and attractive city, has been named one of the top 100 places to live in the United States, as well as the greatest green city. The main campus, located in the centre of New York State's Finger Lakes region, has 608 buildings on 2300 acres of property. To run its academic programmes in Ithaca, the University has eight undergraduate departments and four graduate and professional units. Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM), the nation's top-ranked medical and graduate school, as well as a Tech campus in New York City, are all part of the University. By expanding its reach to Doha, Qatar, where WCM-Q has developed a centre of excellence in basic, translational, and clinical biomedical research, Cornell is creating new world standards in inpatient care.
Cornell provides almost 80 majors and 100 graduate fields of study, as well as 18 minors for further study. Cornell students have the highest acceptance rates among applicants to the country's top medical and law schools. According to Princeton Review, the University also has the 7th best college library. In 2019, a total of 24,027 students from all 50 states and 116 countries enrolled at the main campus. Furthermore, international students make up 24 percent of the student body on the Ithaca campus. On an annual basis, Career Services conducts around 8,000 interviews.
