The Department of Physics at Washington University is an active department with internationally renowned faculty and research groups in the fields of astrophysics, condensed matter physics and materials, quantum information, extraterrestrial materials, biophysics, nuclear physics, and particle physics. The department plays a major role in the McDonnell Center for the Space Sciences, the Institute for Materials Science and Engineering, and the Center for Quantum Sensors.
The department presently offers majors in physics and in astrophysics, as well as minors in physics, in astrophysics and astroparticle physics, and in biomedical physics. Undergraduates can enroll in a large number of specialized courses and are encouraged to actively participate in research within the department. The graduate program includes a masters program and a doctoral program which offers generous support for students as well as a friendly community in which to pursue their research aspirations.
